The Nihilanth
The Nihilanth is onebelieved to have been the single most powerful known inhabitant of Xen and, to date, the only confirmed member of its species. Possessing immense intelligence, powerful psychic abilities and a mastery over dimensional phenomena beyond that of human understanding. The Creature ruled large portions of the largest,Borderworld iffor notan THEunknown largestperiod creatureof belongingtime prior to the realmBlack ofMesa Incident.
Unlike most Xenian organisms within Xen, the Earth-XenNihilanth Borderworld. To date, it is the only one known of its kind and a creature of high intellect. While most creatures of Xen seem primitive in nature, lackingdemonstrated the ability to speakcommunicate orthrough communication, both speech and telepathic projection. Encounters recorded by Black Mesa personnel described it as highly intelligent and capable of directly influencing the minds of lesser beings. It is widely believed based on the left over data before the explosion of Black Mesa, that the Nihilanth is the one notable exception, one who is reportedlywas responsible for holding openingmaintaining the Portalsdimensional breaches that connected Earth to Xen during the initialResonance Black Mesa Incident andCascade, allowing hisXenian forceslifeforms to pourcross through.over into the human-controlled territories of Earth.
Public knowledge regarding the Nihilanth is limited, most only learning through the storiesMuch of Gordon Freeman told second-hand or that of the tales of the Vortigaunt tribes that Humanity has interacted with.
But what is known isabout the creatureNihilanth originates from fragmented Black Mesa records, the testimony of surviving personnel and the accounts and stories from the many Vortigaunt tribes, some citing accounts attributed to Gordon Freeman himself. As a result, many aspects of history remain subject to debate. What is oneknown however, is that the Nihilanth was not native to Xen, just like various other wildlife of immenseXen.
According presumablyto wieldingVortigaunt accounts, the VortessenceNihilanth orhad its own form of "magic" that allowed it to perform feats seen as impossible by modern sciences. It could perform powerful psychic feats, allowing it to dominate and control the minds of its subjects leading it to run awayfled from the Combine duelong before Humanity's first contact with the Borderworld. Whether it escaped a conquered world, a destroyed civilization, or an entirely different reality remains unknown. Xen became its refuge; a place beyond the immediate reach of the Combine and one of the few locations it could rebuild its strength.
Over time, the Nihilanth established itself as the dominant power within the Borderworld. Numerous Xenian species fell under its control, either through direct coercion or psychic domination. Among the most notable were the Vortigaunts, who were subjected to centuries of enslavement and forced to serve the Nihilanth's growing domain.
Despite its immense power, the Nihilanth's rule was built upon fear and survival rather than conquest. Evidence suggests that much of its activity within Xen was motivated by a desire to prepare for the eventual return of the Combine. The Borderworld served not only as a refuge, but also as a final line of defence against an enemy the Nihilanth considered too dangerous to take on alone.
In its goal to defend itself against the Combine, it established various troops that would ultimately help in its battle when the time came. The first was the Kingpins, presumed to be second-in-command to the CombinesNihilanth interestand each possessed their own select powerful abilities, each unique to their own design. Second was the Controllers, aerial forces capable of utilizing energy bursts for offense or simply extend the range of the Nihilanth's influence. And finally the Grunts; a force of tank-bred hulking clones wielding target seeking drones that pierce their target.
This uneasy balance ended during the Black Mesa Incident
Following the Resonance Cascade, Black Mesa's Lambda Complex succeeded in wipingopening a stable gateway into Xen. Gordon Freeman was subsequently deployed into the Borderworld where he fought through the Nihilanth's remaining forces and ultimately confronted the creature itself. The death of the Nihilanth kindmarked outthe ascollapse of its dominion over Xen. Its armies fragmented, its control over the Vortigaunts was broken and centuries of established order disappeared within the hour. For the Vortigaunts, the event represented liberation. For Xen, it marked the beginning of a potentialperiod threat.of Theinstability Nihilanththat foundwould eventually be exploited by the Borderworld and knew escape, and preparation were its only chance.Combine.
The first thingWhether the Nihilanth did was fragment itself as a failsafe; Kingpins were created to rule as seconds in command, and its successor in the event of its death. The Controllers were also created, aerial units that used energy based attacks to control or kill their foes, an extension of the Nihilanths psychic powers.
Once the stage was set, the Nihilanth began to adopt, or kidnap, species from all quarters of space, incorporating them into one singular grand war machine in the loose hope to fight back, resistance on a grand scale.
Xen, the borderworld became its home, its fortress, its last hope.
Denizens of Xen began to be collected, brought and called upon, indoctrinated or enslaved to its designs. Efficiency was upheld through oppression; the Nihilanth knew to fight the unstoppable Empire, it had to, in itself, become the very thing it was fighting against. The Xenian dominion was created, settled, and prepared. Dozens of species joined in its glory, working in harmony; everything had a part to play in its plans, from the Kingpins all the way down to the lowly headcrab. An ecosystem was created, a world where no world existed, one could almost describe it as a utopia, if it weren’t for the ceaseless preparations for war. Machines of grand power, selective breeding, mystic defences, even the very flora of Xen were designed to kill.

Then, the Freeman entered Xen and, guided by a mysterious hand, killed the Nihilanth, throwing the utopia into absolute chaos; everything he had worked for was torn apart in just a few moments. Whether for good or for worse.
